Overview

As part of Phase II of its market-enabling roadmap, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is engaged with the Government of India through the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Health, partners, and associated enterprises to catalyze a market for improved cookstoves and chulhas to reach 5 million households by 2017. Household air pollution (HAP) is a significant public health, environmental, gender, and livelihoods issue in the country— 25% of the 4.3 million global premature HAP deaths occur in India every year, according to World Health Organization estimates, and more than 800 million people are impacted by exposure to HAP in the country.

The Alliance is working with the Indian government and the state governments of Kerala, Rajasthan, and others, to build awareness on HAP among affected populations. In addition, following the announcement of the government's unprecedented plans to provide cooking gas connections to 50 million households, the Alliance is encouraging leaders to make adoption of the news stoves a priority of the program. One of the keys to success for Prime Minister Modi's campaign will be convincing consumers to give up their chula and make the switch to a gas-burning stove.

The Alliance is also undertaking a consumer segmentation study and working to build consumer demand by conducting activities such as: helping develop and institute cookstoves and fuels performance standards, supporting testing capacity and sustainability for a testing center in Delhi, and helping create a hospital registry to track incidences of burns from various fuels and cooking techniques. The partnership has focused on increasing access to financing and testing services, improving knowledge of gender mainstreaming in cookstoves and fuels programs, scaling cleaner fuels access and support for enterprise development through various Alliance grant facilities such as the Spark, Pilot Innovation, and Women’s Empowerment Funds, and fostering partnerships with investors and venture capital firms, and Chef Sanjeev Kapoor as a champion of the clean cooking sector.
