Kerosene and LPG are the two principal clean household fuels in India that have substituted biomass for cooking. Two other alternatives, natural gas and electricity, are not commonly used because of a lack of general availability for household use, in the case of natural gas, and much higher cost, in the case of electricity. Biomass-based clean fuels, such as biogas, have not yet been commercialized, although there is significant interest in India in exploring the potential of nonhydrocarbon alternatives.
