The World Health Organization has assessed, for the first time, the burden of disease from indoor air pollution at the national level. The approach relies on three ingredients: 1. Percentage of population using biomass fuels and coal, by country; 2. Deaths and DALYs for ALRI, COPD and lung cancer, by age group and country; and 3. Relative risk of ALRI, COPD and lung cancer when exposed to indoor air pollution. All data were obtained for 2002 or the latest available year.
