The Improved Cookstoves (ICS) programme aims to develop the cookstove market by enhancing the performance of all the actors in the ICS value chain: producers, retailers, testing agencies and users. ARMI, the Lao not-for-profit association, manages activities such as training, knowledge exchange, and monitoring. The programme promotes the ICS stove that uses up to 20% less wood and charcoal than traditional stoves (such as the Tao Lai and Tao Dam).

The overall objective is to contribute towards poverty alleviation in Lao PDR through the development of a sustainable consumption and production chain of cleaner and fuel efficient Improved Cook Stoves (ICS) which will promote the efficient use of wood and charcoal and lower greenhouse gas emission.

The specific objectives are:

  1. The sustainable production and consumption of cleaner and fuel efficient Improved Cook Stoves (ICS) is well established, 50% of the market share of cook stoves will be dominated by the ICS.
  2. The target consumers in five target provinces will have better awareness and access to purchase the ICS, as an affordable and high quality alternative to the traditional cook stoves.

Promotional activities are organised with local partners such as the Lao Womens’ Union, and the initiative is financed by the EU SWITCH-Asia programme in partnership with SNV, Oxfam and the Blue Moon Fund.
